The 1st edition is not loaded down with facts & scientific findings. Fr.
Why I prefer the 1st edition to the 2nd edition:
Seraphim did not want his book to be yet another argument for
Creationism vs. Evolution, which is what everyone wants to turn it into. This is
why he carefully chose the title not to have the word "evolution" in
it. He left out many of the facts that were available even in his
day, – on purpose.
The 2nd edition is 300 extra pages of bogging down with more
information. One thing Fr. Seraphim was trying to show is the mind of
the Church Fathers before the theory was ever even thought up. He was
trying to raise us up above the "hard fact vs. blind faith", or
"evolution vs. creationism" into the simple but solid mind of the Fathers. The 2nd
edition fails to do that unless you read the 1st edition first.
The original format was valuable as it was, since the collection of articles overlapped
and important points were repeated. All the loose ends were tied into one neat package.
